Trees for climate change

Britain’s apparent rising temperatures may see an increase in the planting of heat tolerant trees as an alternative to our native trees. Below is a short list of trees that we recommend for planting in locations that become dry during the summer months.

1. Castanea sativa (Sweet Chestnut)

  • Mature Height 10-35m, Spread 10-15m

2. Catalpa bignoniodes (Indian Bean Tree)

  • Height 8-12m, Spread 4-8m

3. Corylus colurna (Turkish Hazel)

  • Height 12-15m, Spread 6-8m

4. Gleditsia tricanthos (Honey Locust)

  • Height 15-20m, Spread 8-10m

5. Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair Tree)

  • Height 20-30m, Spread 10-15m

6. Paulownia tomentosa

  • Height 8-15m, Spread 8-15m

7. Quercus coccinea (Scarlet Oak)

  • Height 15-25m, Spread 8-15m
