1. Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiate Hornbeam (central
Europe)
Mature height,15-18 metres with a spread of 12-15m. This popular
deciduous tree starts out with a narrow pyramidal crown which
eventually ends up as a wide ovoid. It has a very compact and
closed crown with a strictly vertical trunk. The leaves are a fresh
green colour in spring and turn golden yellow in the autumn.
Carpinus can be planted in sun to shade on all soil types.
2.Liquidambar styraciflua / Sweet gum
(south-eastern North America)
Mature height 25-30 metres with a spread of 4-8m. This medium
size deciduos tree has a slenderly conical crown to begin with then
when older the branches grow out wider so the crown becomes ovoid.
The leaves are maple-like 5 or 7 lobed and are best known for their
intense autumn colours which are varied; wine-red with yellow,
orange and violet and all kinds of shades. If planted on a humid
site the leaves turn more violet. Liquidambar requires a position
in full sun on fresh to moist soil.
3.Platanus hispanica / London Plane (north east America
& south east Europe)
Mature height 25-30 metres with a spread of 15-25m. A
majestic, large deciduous tree initially broadly conical then
extensive with a round crown. Fast growing 50-70cm a year in the
first 15-20 years. Attractive maple-like leaves and bark that peels
off in plates. Very tolerant to pruning. Maple like leaves, dull
green turning brown-yellow in the autumn. Platanus is robust and
not demanding, it can be positioned in sun or light shade in all
soil types except calcareous.
4.Quercus palustris / Pin Oak / Swamp Oak (eastern North
America)
Mature height 20-25 metres with a spread of 10-15m. A reasonably
fast-growing deciduous tree with a straight main trunk and handsome
horizontal growing branches. This Quercus is another tree with
exceptional autumn leaf colours, deeply cut, slenderly lobed,
8-12cm long, bright green before turning dark red in the
autumn.
Lime (Tilia) Avenue Trees
1.Tilia platyphyllos (broad or large leaved
lime)
Stately, large, fast growing tree. Matt green, slanted heart
shaped leaves. Prefers evenly moist, nutrient rich, deep soils.
Yellow autumn colour. Round crown, 35m High 20m Spread.
2.Tilia cordata (small leaved lime)
Popular Slow growing (when young), avenue tree. Less demanding
than T. platyphyllos, requires less nutrients and less stable soil.
Very good yellow autumn colour. Round crown, 30m High 15m
Spread.
3.Tilia tomentosa (silver lime)
Impressive, fast growing large tree, Dry to moist, nutrient rich
soils, mildly acid to alkaline. T. tomentosa even thrives on poor,
dry soils. Glossy green, heart shaped leaves, white underneath.
Brilliant yellow autumn colour. Broadly conical, dense crown, 30m
High 20m Spread.
4.Tilia euchlora (crimean linden)
Medium to fast growing tree. Requirements similar to those of T.
cordata. Slanted heart shaped shiny dark green leaves, light green
underside. Yellow autumn colour. Conical crown, 20m High 12m
Spread.
5.Tilia x europaea 'Pallida' (common lime)
Fast growing powerful, large tree. Straight single leading stem.
Light green, slanted heart shaped leaves. Long lasting yellow
autumn colour. Nutrient rich, deep, dry to moist soils. Conical
crown, 40m High 15m Spread.
